The current cultural climate of high expectations, extraordinarily high competition for college entrance, and lower levels of emotional and social support is contributing to dramatic increases in high risk behaviors among teens and young adults.
The adolescent abuse of prescription drugs including ADHD medications and the opiates is extreme with 12% of teens reporting abuse of these drugs within the past year and overdose the number one cause of death in young people for the first time in history.
Fairfield County, CT has experienced an epidemic rate of overdose deaths in the past 10 years and untreated and undertreated mental health problems are contributing to extraordinary community and school repercussions. What can parents, therapists, and school based staff do to have a positive impact on children while caring for themselves?
