The Newtown Action Alliance, a non-profit, grass-roots organization whose mission is to halt gun violence across the nation, released a statement this week related to recent tragedies:

Newtown Action Alliance Chairman Po Murray cited a recent report that indicates that there have been 79 school shootings since the Sandy Hook massacre, most recent occurring in Troutdale, Oregon; Seattle, Washington; and Isla Vista, California.

“We send our heartfelt condolences to the communities that have been subjected to tragic and violent school shootings in the last two weeks.  The members of Newtown Action Alliance understand firsthand the devastating impact of school shootings and the shock, grief, and pain that follow.”  Murray continued, “We recognize that thoughts and condolences are no longer enough.  In order to keep our children and families safe from gun violence in schools, in our homes, and on our city streets, we need more Americans to take action.

“This has been an especially bloody few weeks in America, where mass shootings and everyday gun deaths continue to occur at alarming rates. For many parents, putting children on the school bus or sending them off to college has become a frightening prospect. Meanwhile, politicians on Capitol Hill continue to be influenced by the profit-driven corporate gun lobby,” said Dave Stowe, Vice Chairman of the Newtown Action Alliance. “Those of us who desire gun violence prevention are in the vast majority, and together we have the power to make our country safer by ensuring that not one more child or loved one is senselessly gunned down. Let us all resolve to honor every life lost to senseless violence by making a pledge to honor with action today,” continued Stowe.
