Priyanka Altman, valedictorian of her 2014 graduating class at Danbury High Schools among 10 Connecticut students who have received college scholarships this year from a fund that former U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman created.
Altman heads to Dartmouth College in the fal.
The five graduates from Danbury, Ledyard, Stamford, Monroe and Ellington heading to college will receive $1,500 each. They are the second class to receive money from the fund.
Emily Castle, a 2013 graduate of Ridgefield High School and a rising sophomore at Dartmouth College and Abigail Hungaski, a 2013 graduate of Newtown High School, a rising sophomore at American University, are among the five students who received scholarships last year and will each receive another $1,500 this year.
The scholarships can be renewed for sophomore, junior and senior years if the students maintain a solid academic record.
The fund received 552 applications from students attending 147 Connecticut high schools in 101 cities and towns in 2014 (plus two home school students).
The review and evaluation of applications was based on academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, work experience, and career and educational goals and objectives. Financial need is not considered. Preference is given to applicants who demonstrate outstanding leadership potential and have a record of community service.
