The late Democratic First Selectman Jack Rosenthal who died at age 94 last Monday will be honored with a memorial tribue and service on Thursday, with friends and family sure to celebrate his love of sports, particularly the former New York Giants baseball team, his passion for politics, his devotion to education, and his long love affair with Newtown, a town he served with distinction for more than 40 years in different roles. He was first selectman for six terms dating back to 1975. His son, Herb, later followed in his footsteps.

First Selectman Pat Llodra said he was a “mensch,” a man of wit, intelligence and devotion to making Newtown grow and prosper. She and others suggested what old-timers and newcomers love about the community stems from the devotion of people like Rosenthal who believed in civic contribution.

I am preparing a tribute to Rosenthal and his legacy. Please be sure to read it both online, and in print on Tuesday; my hope is it may inspire others to follow his example.
