Boughton Street YMCA closing in 2 weeks

More than 800 Danbury residents will have to find a new place to exercise and swim on July 25 when the Boughton Street YMCA closes, the organization confirmed Tuesday.

“(I)t is simply no longer financially feasible to maintain and operate two fitness centers that are just 6 miles apart,” read an email notice to Y members Monday night. “Our community-based outreach programs will continue throughout the Greater Danbury area and membership programs will be offered at our Greenknoll branch.”

The closing of the Boughton Street Y comes after a decade of struggle to compete with nearby fitness facilities and retain membership in a building with substantial repair needs.

In 2005 the YMCA announced plans to close. That decision was reversed after the Y got an influx of grant money from the city of Danbury. The Y continues to run Escape to the Arts, a youth services facility on Main Street
