The state Office of Policy Management has approved the merger of two regional planning agencies to form the Northwest Hills Council of Governments.
The new council includes the area towns of Kent, Roxbury, Washington and Warren.
It merged the 9 town Northwestern CT Council of Governments – of which Kent, Roxbury, Washington and Warren belonged — and the 11 town Litchfield Hills Council of Elected Officials.
Roxbury First Selectman Barbara Henry is a past chairman of the NWCCOG and said that board is excited about the merger. Initially concerned about the distribution of state funding to 20 municipalities in the new council, Henry said NWCCOG members “could see the writing on the wall.”
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy pushed through legislation requiring the merger of the state’s 14 regional planning agencies to eight agencies statewide. Those agencies that did not reach merger agreements on their own would be paired by OPM this month.
