CL&P has filed an application with the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority for a proposed increase in rates for delivering electricity.

The proposal would increase the monthly residential charge from the current $16 to $25.50 per month, according to a statement given by CL&P.

The increase in rates would try to address the $117 million gap in expenses for CL&P.

According to CL&P, the gap is due to  capital investments, replacing poles, transformers, wires and other equipment to improve the reliability of the system.

In the next coming months there will be a number of hearings on the proposal, if this is passed the new rates will be in effect as soon as December of 2014.
