A Louisiana man was arrested in Southbury after evading eight different motor vehicle charges in Hartford County.
41-year-old Richard Moore was pulled over Tuesday morning, when he failed to obey a stop sign. Southbury Police then discovered that was driving without a license, insurance, and an unregistered motor vehicle.
Moore told the officer he was a “sovereign citizen and the right to travel was afforded by the Constitution.” The officer asked him to step out of his vehicle, Moore refused and began to roll up his window until the officer blocked it with a baton, police said.
According to the FBI, sovereign citizens believe that the federal, state, and local governments operate illegally. They are considered by the FBI to be extremists and a domestic terrorist threat.
After the officer called for back-up, Moore was arrested and charged with interfering with police, failing to obey a stop sign, operating without a driver’s license, operating without insurance and other charges.
Moore has prawn warrants out for him in Hartford and West Hartford. In those cases he was charged with other motor vehicle infractions.
He is being held on $40,000 bonds in Waterbury. Moore has yet to be released from custody.
