Brookfield is ranked one of the greatest small towns in the country to live, but it has one unique problem – lots of granite that means uranium in the drinking water.

To deal with this, Health Director Ray Sullivan proposed an ordinance requiring that all new wells be tested for uranium, as well as wells on property that is being sold to another party. The ordinance is not punitive, but rather informs the public about whether or uranium is detected and if it then must be treated.

A public hearing on Nov. 20 received no negative comments, and the ordinance has now been prepared. The Board of Selectmen intend to review the ordinance and then take a vote at its meeting on Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Brookfield High School library.
