NEW MILFORD — Numerous complaints have been received by New Milford police over the last few months involving a “Green Dot” money scam. Victims are called by a person who says he is from the IRS and told they owe back taxes. They are told they will be fined or arrested unless the back taxes are immediately paid.
The caller obtains personal information from the victim including social security number and advises the victim to obtain a pre-paid Green Dot money card in the amount owed and to call back and give the card number over the phone. The victims are mostly senior citizens.
THE IRS DOES NOT ASK FOR PERSONAL INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE. If you receive a suspicious call, do not give out any information and call the IRS Fraud line at 1-800-829-0433.
