For Connecticut hunters, deer and turkey hunting season is just a week away.

The season is from September 15 to January 31, 2015 in deer management zones 11 (Fairfield County area) and 12 (Connecticut shoreline towns), according to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Just a few things the DEEP wants hunters to remember:

  • Recent regulations now allow the use of crossbows during the archery hunting seasons. Crossbow hunters are required to have an archery permit.
  • When hunters harvest a deer or turkey, they are required to fill out a harvest tag, sign it, and keep it until it is processed for consumption.
  • Hunters are required to report their deer and turkey kills within 24 hours either on the DEEP website (www.ct.gov/deep/hunting) or by calling a toll free number (1-877-337-4868).
  • Bowhunters must wear 400 square inches of fluorescent orange while walking to and from their tree stands during the firearms deer hunting season.
  • Hunters are advised to take precautions against mosquito bites as West Nile virus has been found in mosquitoes in Connecticut.
