Republican First Selectman Bill Tinsley has some concerns about the preliminary findings of the town’s auditors related to the school district overspending its budget by as much as $1.15 million.
School officials, however, advise these figures are not yet finalized; the audit report is not yet finished, and any accounting errors that have been made will be remedied going forward.
Tinsley, though, said a correction will likely require either a special town meeting to authorize the appropriation of already expended funds, and a decision about replenishing the town’s fund balance, or a voter referendum to cover those costs. School leaders say there is not expected to be any tax impact, but town leaders say that will depend on what is decided about whether, and how, to replenish the fund balance.
This issue will be the subject of future town and school board meetings.
