The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is warning drivers across the state to watch for increased deer and moose at road crossings.

September through December are peak breeding seasons for both moose and the white-tailed deer. Drivers are being asked to heed “Deer Crossing” signs.

When hit, the animals can cause significant car damage. As well as injury and death for the animal.

According to the DEEP, 7,300 deer were killed last year by being hit by a car. On average two moose die each year from car crashes. This number is expected rise as the moose population increases.

All accidents involving deer and moose should be reported to the DEEP at 860-424-3333.
