In the 28th State Senate race, Democrat state representative Kim Fawcett conceded defeat to Republican state representative Tony Hwang for the seat vacated by long-term Republican incumbent John McKinney who opted not to run again so as to seek what turned out to be an unsuccessful bid for governor. Sometime before midnight Fawcett conceded the race even though unofficial results were not yet reported for all of the precincts.

Update: 11:45 p.m.

In the 30th District State Senate race, Democrat William Riiska conceded defeat to incumbent Republican Clark Chapin in what was a back-and-forth race for awhile, but one that Chapin won with a decided advantage in his hometown of New Milford. Riiska said in that town Chapin was ahead by at least 2,000 votes.

“I congratulate Clark Chapin on his win. We have to all work together now to see that Connecticut comes out of the doldrums it finds itself in and flourishes,” said Riiska, a Lakeville attorney.

Original post: 11:40 p.m.

“There’s just been no turnout by Democratic voters. The Republicans came out and voted in the district and the Democrats didn’t. It’s that simple,” Riiska said explaining his loss to Chapin.

In the 107th District race between 16-year incumbent Republican David Scribner of Brookfield and Democrat Dan Smolnik, Scribner appeared to be the definitive leader with 4,579 votes to 1,767 votes with three out of five precincts reporting unofficial results. In the 24th State Senate race, incumbent Republican Michael McLachlan had a major lead over his Working Families opponent Theodore Feng in an unofficial tally of 12,252 to 2,017 with just two more precincts to be counted.

In the 26th State Senate race between incumbent Republican Toni Boucher and Democrat Philip Sharlach, Boucher appeared to be leading 8,752 votes to 5,460 with 6 of 18 precincts reporting results.

In the 30th District race between Republican incumbent Clark Chapin and William Riiska, Chapin appears be well ahead of his opponent with 16 of 27 precincts counted.
