At about 11:40 a.m. Wednesday, Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire Company responded to a large brush fire that was burning acres of wooded land.

The brush fire started in the wooded area between Sherman Street and Sugarloaf Road, said Bill Halstead, Fire Marshal for Newtown.

Fire companies from Southbury, Newtown and Monroe all gave mutual aid to Sandy Hook. It took over an hour for the flames to be put out, Halstead said.

The brush fire burned five to seven acres between Sugarloaf Road and Sherman Street.

The difficulty with putting out the brush fire was because firefighters were having a hard time trying to access it.

The fire was blazing deep in a wooded area, firefighters had go through fields and yards to access the flames, Halstead said.

The fire burned five to seven acres of land and produced a large amount of smoke. However, Halstead said that no one was ever in danger of the fire.

Brush fires are common this time of year, Halstead said. With hot windy days, like the ones we have been having, brush fires do pop up from time to time he said.
