NEWTOWN — Newtown Police have received a $47,100 grant from the Dept. of Transportation Highway Safety Office to combat drunk driving.
The grant will be use to set up checkpoints and place extra officers on patrol specifically enforcing drunken driving laws during the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years holiday season.
The first three checkpoint in Newtown will be briefly stopping drivers and interviewing them. Other check points and patrols will be held through 2015.
The grant is through the 2014/2015 DUI Enforcement Program. It provides reimbursement for 75 percent of the cost of the extra patrols and check points.
