Update 11:03 a.m.

A large part of the NorthEast Building Supply lumber yard has been destroyed, said Jon Barbagallo, regional public information officer.

The Cornwall Fire Department was dispatched at 11:37 p.m. Monday night to the lumber yard on Kent Road. When firefighters arrived, two buildings were fully involved with flames and smoke.

It is still unknown where or how it started, Barbagallo said. But fire marshals are still on the scene.

The fire consumed two buildings, one was a large  lumber storage facility that held big pallets of lumber and finished products, Barbagallo said. The second was the company’s main office, that held a show room and the town of Cornwall’s building inspectors office.

There were 21 active fire departments on scene and 14 departments that were fighting the fire, Barabagallo said. It took five hours to put out the fire due to the large  fuel load.

Firefighters had to transport water in from the Housatonic River since there were no fire hydrants in the area.

Barabagallo said that workers from the lumber yard were at the scene of the fire  in the early morning.
