BETHEL — A former staff member at Frank A. Berry School is under investigation for “inappropriate activities with minor children,” according to the superintendent’s office.
In a letter sent to parents and staff Friday afternoon, Superintendent of Schools Christine Carver said district officials learned about the investigation yesterday and immediately placed the employee on paid administrative leave. The staff member later resigned from Bethel Public Schools.
State and local authorities are investigating the matter and “district officials are cooperating fully with the investigation,” she wrote.
Carver also said the district has reason to believe that the former employee has sent information about the activities to certain members of the school community as well as others with no affiliation with the district. It is not clear what the nature of the information is.
The district is asking that any member of the school community who has received any such information immediately share that information with the State Police Major Crime Squad, Southbury Troop A, Detective Flynn, at 203-267-2225.
Carver said she was not authorized to disclose the employee’s gender or job at the elementary school since this is a pending investigation.
“Clearly, any allegation of inappropriate contact with minors is disturbing and causes concerns about the safety of the children in our school community,” Carver wrote in her letter. “Please be reassured that the safety of children is our foremost concern and there are many policies and procedures in place to ensure the wellbeing of all our children.
“I am sending this letter to all members of our school community because of the gravity of the allegations and a desire to keep the entire school community informed about these troubling reports,” she continued. “If you have any specific concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.”
