DANBURY – The new president of Western Connecticut State University is John Clark, the acting executive director for business and industry relations at the City University of New York.
Clark, one of three finalists, was appointed in a unanimous vote by the Board of Regents for Higher Education Thursday in Hartford.
His starting salary is $260,000.
“I am deeply honored and privileged,” Clark said in a prepared statement. “It is truly the highlight of my career.”
Clark will replace beloved WCSU president James Schmotter, who will retire on July 1 after 11 years.
The Board of Regents for Higher Education launched a nation-wide search for Schmotter’s replacement in December.
“We expect Dr. Clark to build upon all facets of the university, including growing enrollment, enhanced curricular offerings, and commitment to the community,” said Gregory Gray, president of the Connecticut State Colleges and University system, which governs WCSU. “I would also like to thank WSCU President James Schmotter for his 11 years of dedication and leadership to Western Connecticut State University.”
