BREWSTER, N.Y. — State police are investigating a holdup at a Route 22 bank on Monday, the second bank robbery in Putnam County in less than a week.
Police said the latest robbery occurred at the Peoples United Bank, located in the Lakeview Plaza, about 3:40 p.m.
The suspect, identified as a white male in his mid-30s with reddish facial hair, entered the bank and demanded cash.
He was wearing what appeared to be a beige-colored jacket, black vest and a baseball cap. No weapon was shown, according to officials.
The robber fled on foot in an unknown direction, and a search of the area using a police dog came up empty.
The hold-up took place three days after Friday’s robbery at the Putnam County National Bank on Haviland Drive in Putnam Lake.
In that incident, a white male in his 40s, about 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighing about 180 pounds, entered the bank about 11 a.m., ordered the tellers to lie down, Putnam sheriff’s Capt. William McNamara said.
Tellers assumed the man had a weapon and reported the incident as an armed robbery, McNamara said, but police later determined he never actually showed a gun.
The suspect, who escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash, was wearing a gray hoodie sweatshirt, ski pants, ski mask and sunglasses, McNamara said.
State police in Brewster said Tuesday they have not yet determined whether the robberies are connected.
Police are asking anyone with information about the Brewster robbery to contact the Bureau of Criminal Investigation at 845-279-8656 or 845-677-7300.
