DANBURY – A “plumbing issue” on Sunday shut down portions of the emergency department at Danbury Hospital, hospital officials said Monday.

Hospital spokeswoman Andrea Rynn said a “work station and a couple of treatment rooms” sustained water damage and would likely remain closed for several more days. She dismissed earlier news reports that a main line break sent raw sewage into the emergency department.

“It’s a matter of inconvenience,” Rynn said, adding that the leak did not pose an environmental threat to patients, some of whom had to be transferred to other rooms.

A large tent was also erected in the parking lot outside the emergency room entrance to accommodate overflow patients.

The leak started about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Rynn said, but was contained within several hours. She did not provide a cause.

No further details were available.
