DANBURY — City police suspect one of the drivers killed in a crash that claimed three lives on Tuesday suffered from a medical condition which may have contributed to the accident.

Edward Kish, 45, of Brookfield, suffered a medical condition prior to the 11:45 a.m. crash that killed him, Jane Shannon, 78, and her husband, William Shannon, 77, both of Bethel, said Lt. Christian Carroccio, Danbury police spokesman. Details on the medical condition were not available.

Kish was driving his Honda Accord northbound on South Street near the Bethel town line when he veered across the road and collided with a Buick Lucerne driven by Jane Shannon and in which William Shannon was a passenger, police said. Witnesses reported seeing Kish slumped over the wheel of his car prior to the crash, police said.

The head-on collision forced the Buick back into a box truck driven by Roy Bass, of Middle Island, N.Y.

All four individuals were transported to Danbury Hospital where Kish, Jane Shannon and William Shannon died of their injuries. Bass, 59, was treated and released. Autopsies for Kish and the Shannons are scheduled for Thursday, according to the Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner.

Carroccio said police continue to investigate the crash and ask that any witnesses contact Sgt. Rory DeRocco or Officer Lance Brevard of the Danbury Police Traffic Division at (203) 797-2157 or (203) 797-2156.
