Lawmaker blasts wage proposal as a job killer

State Sen. Toni Boucher, R-Wilton, issued a statement Wednesday calling out members of the legislature’s Labor Committee for a proposal she said would have a chilling effect on job creation efforts in the state.

The proposal, Boucher said, would impose fines for large employers who fail to pay their workers a standard wage of at least $11.31 per hour. The companies, under the proposal, would be charged a $1 fine for each employee who doesn’t make the standard wage.

“Connecticut says that it is open for business. However is just paying lip service to the public’s justifiable concern over jobs,” Boucher said. “Dictating what an employer must pay employees sends a chilling effect throughout the business community and expands Connecticut’s business unfriendly reputation. If this proposal is successful we would be the first state to pass such a mandate.”
