The Newtown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 308 will celebrate their 75th anniversary “Diamond Jubilee” on Sunday at 1 p.m. at their post located at Freedom Defenders Way, the corner of Wasserman Way and South Main Street across from Walgreens.
The celebration will include cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and cake.
Founded in March 1939, the Newtown Post is the 8th oldest in Connecticut. Since its inception, they have extended support to veterans and their families and participate in many community, municipal and school outreach programs.
Newtown VFW and its Mens and Ladies Auxiliaries collaborate with schools for Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day celebrations. They sponsor writing contests, Patriot Pen (grades 6 – 8) and Voice of Democracy (grades 9 – 12). Participants compete for Post championships and prizes. Post winners compete for state/national prizes.
VFW and Auxiliary members visit with veterans at Ashlar Nursing Home every month and support the state veterans home in Rocky Hill. Newtown VFW places new flags each year before Memorial Day on the graves of all our deceased military. Old, unusable flags are retired with the help of the Boy Scouts on Flag Day each year.
Newtown VFW has also responded to help others during times of need, i.e. support for First Responders after 12-14; outreach to Sparks, Nevada teachers family after shooting and outreach to tornado victims in Moore, Oklahoma.
At Sunday’s celebration, past Connecticut State Commander, 1960-61,Ed Zamm, will present a citation from the National VFW Commander-in-Chief.
