BETHEL - The Red Cross is providing assistance to six people displaced after a fire Monday on Greenwood Avenue, spokesman Paul Shipman said Tuesday.

Four people received help with emergency housing and food needs. One person received help with emergency food needs but was able to find alternate housing. A sixth resident did not require aid but was provided with Red Cross information on recovering from disasters.

The fire in the first floor of a combined commercial and apartment building at 132 Greenwood Avenue forced the evacuation of 12 residents from apartments on the second and third floor,

Six were  later allowed to return to their apartments, Fire Chief Fred Ingram said.

Fire Marshal Tom Galliford said the fire was sparked by plumbers soldering in one of the businesses that was being renovated.

Shipman said Red Cross disaster assistance is free of charge and is made possible by donations and the work of volunteers.  For more information about the Red Cross and how you can help, visit www.redcross.org.
