The Danbury Music Centre announces the availability of the Mrs. Bernice B. Chance Memorial Music Scholarship to be awarded in June. Candidates will be graduates of Danbury High School entering their junior or senior year in college, majoring in music education and requiring financial assistance. Special consideration will be given to students who show an interest in and a willingness to educate future generations in the historical significance of American music including Negro Spirituals.
Mrs. Chance grew up in North Carolina and studied singing under world renowned opera singer, Miss Margaret Tynes. She later moved to Danbury where she was active in the Senior Choir of New Hope Baptist Church singing many solos with the choir. She passed on her love of music to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mrs. Chance died on January 1, 2013. This scholarship is given by her family in memory of their mother’s legacy.
The $500 scholarship will be awarded in June. Guidelines about the scholarship and how to apply are available by contacting the Danbury Music Centre at 203-748-1716; or through email, dmc1935@snet.net. Applications are due on or before May 16.
The Danbury Music Centre also has the Deming Family Music Scholarship.Mary Deming and her husband, the late Robert Deming, have funded this scholarship to express their deep appreciation for the philosophy, the programs, and the contributions of the Danbury Music Centre to the Deming family and to music lovers in the greater Danbury area.
A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student majoring in music at an accredited college or university who is entering his/her junior or senior year in college or is a graduate student. Students from Danbury and surrounding towns are invited to apply. Special consideration will be given to those who are or have been participants in the programs of the Danbury Music Centre.Applications are available now by contacting the Danbury Music Centre.
