I never cease to be amazed at the talent of our area youth, but I have to admit I was particularly blown away on Sunday with New Milford High School’s performance of one of the longest running Broadway musical, “CATS.”
From the opening curtain to the last tune, this was sheer delight. Different than the typical musical plot, and a departure from what NMHS has done in the past, this was a ballet of sorts, with the poems of T.S. Eliot told completely through the dance and music. The plain set is ingenuous, complete with moving parts and fog, and the costuming and makeup are beyond what anyone might expect of a high school theater group.
Again, kudos to musical Director Bob Keck, New Milford’s own “Phantom of the Opera,” who has been doing this work for more than 30 years. He also has an adult supporting cast of choreographer Debbie Maguire, Production Director Steve Donahue and Katie Gardner and Pit Orchestra Director David Syzdek, as well as lots of parent volunteers who helped with costumes, makeup and hair. Indeed, the transformation of the students was such that their regular self photos were displayed in the lobby next to their “CATS” personas. Without them, it would definitely have been hard to tell who was who.
The show continues this weekend, and as it was a sell-out, even for the Sunday matinee, and I would highly recommend if you want to see an excellent performance _ you don’t have to be a feline lover to love these felines _ you call the box office right away to reserve a ticket: 860-350-6647.
