Cost of SROs to be debated by school board

On Wednesday night, April 2, the Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. in the Brookfield High School library.

On the agenda will be a discussion of the proposed budget for next year. And it is likely to be a lively debate as the Board of Finance voted 4-2 last week on a proposal to forward to voters at a public hearing on April 8. The amount is $38.315 million; the board proposed a $39.6 million budget. The current budget is $38.29 million.

Part of the debate will likely revolve around the cost of school resource officers now assigned to Brookfield High and Whisconier Middle School. In the current budget, the $235,000 cost for those officers trained and hired by the Police Department is in the police budget. For the coming year, the budget proposal includes a transfer of the expense for the school resource officers to be in the school budget. But not all of the school board members, or parents who pushed for the additional security in the schools, favor that idea.

Public participation is offered at the beginning of each board meeting.
