New Fairfield Decathlon team raises money for nationals

The Academic Decathlon Team of New Fairfield High School, a group of nine students, won first place at the Connecticut state championship and will be the only team to represent Connecticut at the nationals in Hawaii this month.

Academic Decathlon is a 10-subject competition covering Language and Literature, Math, Science, Social Studies, Economics, Music, Art, Speech, Interview, and Essay. Every decathlete is expected to show a mastery of all subject areas, and the top scoring team wins the competition.

The team started as a school club in 2008 and has won first place at state competitions in 2010, 2013, and again this year. Students devoted 6 to 10 hours a week outside of class hours and during weekends preparing for the competition. This year, the United States Academic Decathlon nationals will be held in Honolulu, Hawaii on April 24-26.

The students must fund raise to pay for their trip, which includes airfare $7,000, hotel and registration, $1,970, meals $500 or a total cost of $9,470.

The students will host a fund raising dance Friday, April 11, at 7:30pm at New Fairfield Company A
Firehouse, 302 Ball Pond Rd, New Fairfield.
