Danbury officials are scheduled to open proposals at 2 p.m. this afternoon from private companies interested in operating the city’s emergency dispatch center. At least four companies so far have submitted proposals, according to the city’s purchasing director.
Proposals will be reviewed by committee and a decision is expected within the next few weeks.
Mayor Mark Boughton has been proposing to have the dispatch center operated by a private company in an effort to save taxpayers dollars. He said recently that he hopes to save money or at least break even with the deal.
Boughton said the move will also put more police officers on city streets who are currently working on the dispatch center. Earlier proposals to have a regional dispatch fell apart when several area communities including Bethel and Ridgefield backed away from the plan, preferring instead to have their own dispatch centers.
