State police step up patrols for Thanskgiving weekend

State police will be using unmarked cars in addition to marked cruisers as part of a stepped-up patrol efforts over the Thanksgiving weekend, traditionally one of the busiest travel times of the year.

The increased activity will include sobriety checkpoints and roving DUI patrols, targeting suspected drunken drivers and  motorists who are operating  aggressively and unsafely.

Troopers from the Troop A barracks in Southbury will be conducting roving patrols in their coverage area between Waterbury and Danbury.

Last Thanksgiving,  state police across Connecticut investigated 410 accidents, three of them fatal and 59 resulting in injuries.

Troopers made 1,611 arrests for speeding, issued 85 tickets for setbelt violations and charged 62 motorists with drunken driving.

Another  3,041 tickets were issued for moving violations, including cell phone usage , unsafe lane changes and following too close.
