The U.S. News and World report just released its rankings of high schools, which includes data on more than 19,400 public high schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia. Schools were awarded gold, silver or bronze medals based on their performance on state assessments and how well they prepare students for college.
Among the top 50 are several Connecticut high schools: The Academy of Aerospace and Engineering, in Hartford, Ct., 15; Connecticut International Baccalaureate Academy in East Hartford, CT, 31.
Connecticut’s rankings within the state include: the two academies as one and two followed by
Weston High,3; Wilton High, 6; Ridgefield High 8; Joel Barlow High, 13; Newtown, 16; Brookfield, 21.
The magazine teamed up with American Institutes for Research, a D.C.-based organization, to evaluate schools in three phases. The first two steps looked at overall student performance on state-mandated assessments, as well as how effectively schools educated their black, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students. We then used participation in and performance on AP and IB exams to evaluate how well schools prepared students for college-level course work.
Many people don’t believe in the value of the rankings but if you are interested, take a look at http://bit.ly/1nlQ8xJ
