No other event like the World Cup has the ability to bring together people for a common passion. SF Gate photo editor Douglas Zimmerman stopped by Danbury to photograph Brazilian fandom.
The World Cup kicked off on Thursday afternoon in Brazil. The event was watched closely by thousands of Brazilians far from home in Danbury, Connecticut.
Around 40,000 Brazilian immigrants call Connecticut home, and many of them have settled in Danbury, Connecticut which according to the 2000 Census was the third largest Brazilian community in the United States. Many of them are just as soccer crazy as their fellow countrymen in Brazil.
Throughout downtown Danbury Brazilians packed bars, restaurants and living rooms to watched the Brazil national team rebound from an early Croatia goal to win 3-1.
After the win an impromptu victory parade rolled along Main Street in downtown Danbury. It was the first of what the local Brazilian community hopes will be several victory parades this World Cup.
