Municipal Building Committee Chairman Paul Checco was dismayed with the behavior of some Huckleberry Hill Elementary parent volunteers who on Monday refused to obey parking rules at the Cadigan Park construction site, essentially blocking the driveway so that construction vehicles could not enter.
Checco, also a Board of Education member, said he believes that the disregard shown to the construction crews requires a formal apology from those who disregarded the need to park elsewhere during a play day event for students that was occurring across the street at the town beach park.
In the public participation portion of the meeting, Checco said students are taught to follow rules and show respect for authority, and the parents unwillingness to do the same proves a negative example.
Police were not called to the scene, but Major Jay Purcell said he was informed of the problem and noted that he believed this to be a one-day anomaly, and he does not anticipate a future problem as this was a large event that overwhelmed the ability to park in the makeshift lot at town lot. If there was to be another large event, Purcell said he would suggest the police be notified so that an officer could assist with directing traffic to appropriate locations.
