On July 3, the earth will be at aphelion  the farthest it will be from the sun in 2014. That’s ’s 94,506,462 miles.

But, don’t get anxious. The earth has a nearly circular orbit In January, at perihelion, when we’re closest to the sun, there’s only a 3 million mile difference. The earth’s orbit is nearly circular, the sun nearly at its center.

What creates our seasons then, isn’t how far or near we are from the sun. That’s more constant than we think. It’s the way the earth axis is tilted that gives us Junes and Novembers, swimming weather and skiing weather. Try finding an exoplanet with that!
