At the Danbury War Memorial Gym there was no line or ballot box filled, just eager election officials waiting for voters to come through the doors.

The primary voting for ward five was off to a slow start.

As of noon on Tuesday only 111 residents had placed their votes. Ward five has 2,027 eligible voters, 713 Republicans and 1,314 Democrats are registered, Scott Demuth a election official said.

“It’s been pretty slow, a lot of reading magazines and being on iPads,” Demuth said.

But Demuth holds out hope it will pick up later in the day.

“Primary elections are critical,” Demuth said, “It’s what makes the party system work.”

Salvado Salgado, 65, came out to vote to keep the system of voting alive. Although he is disenchanted with some of the “political atrocities” that have come out of some elected officials service.

“I don’t have the same enthusiasm as I use to have,” Salgado said.

Salgado said at the end of the day he voted because he wanted to keep the practice alive for Americans.

Polls will be open until 8 p.m. Tuesday night. To see where you vote, visit the Secretary of the State’s voter website at http://tinyurl.com/p29aqoa.
