Bethel will receive $290,149 to improve the town’s commercial center as a part of the state’s Main Street Investment Fund.
The town Office of Economic Development applied for a $340,000 state grant for streetscape improvements to attract new businesses downtown back in June.
The project will include new sidewalks, accessibility ramps, signage, streetscape, and safety improvement.
As well as creating a walkable and ADA compliant downtown by improving public safety and pedestrian access, creating a community gathering place, and increasing recreational opportunities.
In July, Janice Chrzescijanek, town director of economic development, said it could take up to a year to get the necessary permits and start construction. The first phase would include a community gathering place such as a patio with tables and free wi-fi.
Governor Dannel P. Malloy announced on Tuesday that 13 municipalities across Connecticut are being awarded $5 million in grants to develop or improve town commercial districts in an effort to attract small businesses, grow jobs, and improve pedestrian access and livability in town centers.
