NEW MILFORD — A new tradition started Thursday in the New Milford Police Department with the presentation of a Challenge Coin to new officers being sworn in.

Officers Christopher Hayes, of Ridgefield, and Michael Ward, of Kent, were the first new members of the force to receive the coin. They were sworn in Thursday at Roger Sherman Town Hall by Town Clerk Noreen Pitchard.

“The coin identifies its bearer as a member of our police department and is a symbol of department pride,” said Deputy Chief Mark Buckley. “It is a token to inspire teamwork and camaraderie.”

The New Milford Police Department patch is on the front of the coin and the law enforcement oath of honor is on the back. Buckley instructed Hayes and Ward to “reflect on the oath of honor” with each contact they make:

“On my honor, I will never betray my badge, my integrity, my character, or the public trust,” the oath reads. “I will always have the courage to hold myself and others accountable for our actions. I will always uphold the Constitution, my community, and the agency I serve.”
