A New York man has turned himself in on a risk of injury to a minor charge, that stems from a 2013 incident.
Marcelo Melgar-Mejia, 26, was a religious leader at a Koinonia John the Baptist church retreat when a attempted sexual assault took place between him and a 15-year-old boy, according to a court affidavit.
The church retreat was held on 71 Southern Boulevard in Danbury last July. According to the affidavit, The victim and Melgar-Mejia, who is a consecrated brother, had to share a bed at night due to lack of rooms available at the retreat.
During the night the victim told police that Melgar-Mejia attempted to sexually assault him. The victim was able to fight Melgar-Mejia off and got him to leave the room.
After months of investigation, The Danbury Police issued a warrant out for Melgar-Mejia’s arrest. He turned himself on Thursday and was released on $5,000 bond.
Melgar-Mejia is due in Danbury Superior Court on Oct. 3.
