“Choral Gems” offered in Danbury Saturday

The Danbury Concert Chorus will present a free concert of “Choral Gems” at St. James Episcopal Church, 25 West St. in Danbury at 8 p.m., this Saturday, Oct. 25.

Danbury Concert Chorus, conducted by Christine R. Howlett, will perform a variety of beloved choral works, including folk song arrangements by Aaron Copland, “I Was Glad,” by Hubert Hastings Parry, “Set me as a Seal,” by Rene Clausen, “Adonai Ro’i,” by Gerald Cohen, “Dirait-on,” by Morten Lauridsen, and more.

In particular, the Danbury Concert Chorus is proud to perform “Between Us and the Stars,” a work written by Brookfield-based composer Max Vladimiroff, who will be accompanying the choir on piano and organ.  The piece sets a poem by Jerome K. Jerome.

Vladimiroff is a graduate of the Gnessin College of Music in Moscow where he studied piano and improvisation. He obtained his MFA in music composition from the University of California, Irvine, and later studied in New York with composer Philip Lasser.

Conductor Christine Howlett is the Director of Choral Activities at Vassar College where she conducts the Vassar College Women’s Chorus and Vassar College Choir. She is also Artistic Director of Cappella Festiva, an auditioned choral ensemble; also the Summer Choral Festival at Vassar College and the Cappella Festiva Treble Choir.

This concert has been funded by Nancy and Alton Eckert. Admission is free and donations will be accepted at the door.
