NEWTOWN – The state is granting $544,000 for open space projects in Newtown, Redding and Stamford.
“I’m thrilled,” says Rob Sibley, the deputy director of planning and land use in Newtown, which received $110,000 towards the purchase of 37 acres of forest in the southeast corner of town.
Redding received a $170,000 grant towards the purchase of 30 acres of woods and wetlands near the Saugatuck Reservoir.
In Stamford, a $264,000 grant will pay for a 50-foot-wide trail along the Mill River that will connect to the existing Greenway.
The grants are part of a statewide round of grants from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection totaling $7.8 million to protect 2,200 acres of land from development.
