For the 28th State Senate District, a five town-district that includes Newtown, Republican Tony Hwang appears to be enjoying a strong lead over his Democratic opponent Kim Fawcett, both of them veteran state representatives.
The 28th district did not this year have an incumbent as the long-time senator John McKinney stepped down to make what was an unsuccessful bid for governor.
With Fairfield’s count still unknown, Hwang has an unofficial lead of about 1,681 votes, according to his campaign manager Gary Jeanfaivre. In Newtown, where Republican First Selectman Pat Llodra offered an endorsement for Hwang, the unofficial vote tally was 5,223 for Hwang and 4,281 for Fawcett.
