update: 9:55 p.m.
With 9 precincts showing, Chapin is up 5,785 to 5,405, clearly a close race so far in a race that includes 27 precincts across northwestern Connecticut.
With five of 27 precincts reporting in the 30th State Senate District, Democratic challenger William Riiska is 170 votes ahead of Republican incumbent Clark Chapin, a 14-year veteran state lawmaker who is seeking his second term as a state senator.
Chapin of New Milford had strong leads in his hometown and neighboring Brookfield, but Riiska of Lakeville, a local attorney, has proven a close rival at least early in this race. This is the second time Riiska has run against Chapin. Two years ago, Riiska lost to Chapin by 4,000 votes.
