Not-guilty plea in Bethel hit-and-run case

DANBURY — The Bethel man accused of fleeing the scene of a crash that led to the death of a bicyclist from Weston in October pleaded not guilty in state superior court here on Wednesday.

Bethel police arrested Alexander Lee, 21, on Dec. 3 after an investigation found that he was behind the wheel of a car that turned left from Route 302 onto Old Hawleyville Road in Bethel on Oct. 22, striking Thomas Steinert-Threlkeld as he rode his bicycle on Route 302, police said.

Steinert-Threlkeld was knocked to the ground and the driver of a second vehicle pulling out of Old Hawleyville Road unknowingly ran him over, killing him, police said.

On Wednesday, Lee appeared in court to enter a formal not-guilty plea on charges of evading responsibility, improper left turn, tampering with physical evidence and misconduct with a motor vehicle.

The case was continued to Jan. 21. Lee remains held on $150,000 bond.
