NEWTOWN — A sobriety checkpoint resulted in the arrest of five occupants of a vehicle carrying 5 pounds of marijuana, police said.
The checkpoint at Fairfield Hills on Nov. 22 resulted in the arrests when Jason Sosa, 20, of Danbury was stopped about 8:39 p.m. and the officer noted a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, according to police.
Police had Sosa pull the vehicle off the road and a search of the trunk found a duffle bag containing about 5 pounds of marijuana, police said, and materials used for weighing and packaging marijuana.
All five occupants in the vehicle were charged with illegal manufacture and distribution or sale of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of more than four ounces of marijuana.
Arrested were Sosa, Christian Cardenas, 20, of Bridgewater; Gustavo Fonseca-DeOliveria, 18, of Danbury; Johnny Zaruma, 19, of Danbury, and a male under age 18.
Police released Sosa, Cardenas, Fonseca-DeOliveira and Zaruma each on $10,000 bond with a court date of Dec. 9 in Superior Court in Danbury. The juvenile was released ona written promise to appear in Danbury Juvenile Court on Dec. 8.
