Newtown police and EMS were sent to a home on Butterfield Road on Wednesday afternoon for reports of a man shooting himself.
David Edelman, 57, was in his room talking on the phone, when he accidentally shot himself in the leg, police said. Edelman shot himself with a .40 caliber handgun. It is unclear if he was cleaning his gun at the time.
He yelled to his nephew, who was in the room next to him that he needed to call 911 because he had just shot himself, police said.
He was taken to Danbury Hospital where he was admitted and is fair condition as of Friday afternoon, said a hospital representative. Newtown police are still investigating.
