Fire reported in Newtown mobile home

The American Red Cross said it’s helping the man whose trailer was destroyed by a fire Tuesday morning with emergency food and clothing.

UPDATE 4:30 PM

A man and his dog escaped a fire in their mobile home on Sugar Street Tuesday morning, Newtown fire officials said.

It took 10 fire units and about an hour to extinguish the fire, which completed gutted the trailer at 55 Sugar St., according to the Newtown Hook and Ladder fire company.

Fire Marshal Bill Halstead said the fire started somewhere in the furnace area, but the cause was still under investigation late Tuesday afternoon.

The trailer is uninhabitable, but neither the occupant nor his dog was injured, Halstead said.

Fire is under control, officials say, and Red Cross volunteers are en route to assist displaced residents.

A Brookfield Fire Department unit has arrived in town to provide mutual aid.

Fire captain reports that the bulk of the fire is knocked down. Three hose lines are stretched across Sugar Street.

NEWTOWN — Firefighters are on the scene of a burning mobile home on Sugar Street.

The streets in the immediate area are closed to allow crews to work at the site.

A tanker truck from the Southbury Fire Department is being brought to the scene.

A News-Times reporter at the scene says there are big plumes of smoke from the fire.

The fire is at 55 Sugar Street. Initial reports said a woman was able to get out safely.
