RIDGEFIELD — An elderly woman and her son are recovering from burns this morning after they were rescued from a “severe” fire Thursday evening, Ridgefield Fire Marshal David Lathrop said.

The rapidly burning fire at Casagmo condominiums started at about 6:45 p.m. and damaged a two-story unit where the 70-year-old woman lives with her son, who’s 50, Lathrop said.

The pair was first taken to Danbury Hospital but they had to be moved to the Connecticut Burn Center in Bridgeport. The woman was airlifted, according to the fire marshal.

“It was a very severe, a very bad fire,” Lathrop said, but the cause is still under investigation.

As of about 5 a.m., the victims were sedated and in “guarded condition,” doctors told him.

Lathrop said Ridgefield firefighters went “above and beyond” to rescue the woman, who was trapped on the second floor.

“They made one attempt and were driven back because the heat was so immense,” he said. But they tried again and were able to take the woman alive.

The fire was under control by 8 p.m. but fire officials, including the state’s fire marshal, remained in the area for several more hours to investigate, Lathrop said.

The fire did not spread to any other units as it was contained between the fire walls of the unit.
