BETHEL — A recount of last Tuesday’s ballots shows the Board of Education budget failed by two votes, town officials said Tuesday afternoon.
Unofficial results had indicated the $43.3 million request failed by three votes, which forced a recount. The Registrar of Voters’ office examined each of the nearly 3,000 ballots today from about 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The final tally was 1452-1454.
The next step in the budget process is a special Board of Finance meeting, which will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, to discuss potential cuts to the town and school district budgets. The board is also expected to schedule a new special town meeting on the budget.
The $27.6 million town budget proposal was rejected by 29 votes last week and the $1.92 million capital spending package passed with more than 600 votes.
