NEWTOWN – An inaugural running and cycling event to raise money for the foundation of a slain Sandy Hook first-grader is planned for Saturday.

The first annual Newtown Wingathlon planned Saturday at the Fairfield Hills campus will benefit Dylan’s Wings of Change, a foundation established in the memory of 6-year-old Dylan Hockley to help children with autism and related conditions.

The boy, who had autism, was among 20 first-graders and six educators who were killed on Dec. 14, 2012, when a gunman shot his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The Wingathlon involves a family-friendly 5-kilometer event beginning at 9:30 a.m. and a duathlon – a 5-kilometer run, a 24-kilometer cycling route, and another 5-kilometer run.
